Jesus (Hebrew: ישוע / יֵשׁוּעַ; transl .: Yeshua; Greek: Ἰησοῦς; transl .: Iesous), also called Jesus of Nazareth (n. 7–2 BC [note 1] - m. 30–33 AD [note 2]) is the central figure of Christianity and the one that the teachings of most Christian denominations, besides the Messianic Jews, consider to be the Son of God. Christianity and Messianic Judaism regard Jesus as the expected Messiah in the Old Testament and refer to him as Jesus Christ, a name also used outside the Christian context.

Virtually all contemporary scholars agree that Jesus did exist, although there is no consensus on the historical reliability of the gospels and how close the biblical Jesus is to the historical Jesus. [17] Most scholars agree that Jesus was a Jewish preacher from Galilee, was baptized by John the Baptist, and was crucified by order of the Roman governor Pontius Pilate. [18] Scholars have constructed various profiles of the historical Jesus, who generally portray him in one or more of the following roles: the leader of an apocalyptic movement, the Messiah, a charismatic healer, a wise and philosopher, or an egalitarian reformer. [19] Research has been comparing New Testament testimonies with historical records outside the Christian context to determine the chronology of Jesus' life.

Almost all Christian lines believe that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin, performed miracles, founded the Church, died crucified as a means of atonement, rose from the dead, and ascended to heaven from which he will return. [20] The vast majority of Christians worship Jesus as the incarnation of God the Son, the second of the three persons in the Holy Trinity. Some Christian groups reject the Trinity, in whole or in part.

In the Islamic context, Jesus (transliterated as Isa) is considered one of the most important prophets of God and the Messiah. [21] To Muslims, Jesus was the one who brought the scriptures and is the son of a virgin, but not divine, nor the victim of crucifixion. Judaism rejects the belief that Jesus is the expected Messiah, arguing that it does not correspond to the messianic prophecies of the Tanakh.
